How does the UC handle Ws on a transcript

Students often worry about the affect a lot of Ws will have on their acceptance chances. Generally, the UCs don't care much about Ws -- but there are exceptions.  Ideally, if you have a great many Ws they are bunched together within one semester or a few. Maybe you had a bad start early on or you ran into difficulties at some later point.

Ws that are peppered all over the transcript can be a bit more troubling -- especially if they involve major coursework in selective majors.  The question running through the minds of admissions officers is, understandably, will this applicant cave under pressure?

So, in general, don't sweat the Ws. But if you have a lot all over the map in major coursework, give thought as to how you might explain that in the application.
