Haas Supplemental Prompt 2018
UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business just released its supplemental essay prompt for fall 2018 applicants.
As anyone who is applying to Haas knows, the admit rate is very low (a little over 5% of all applicants) and 35% of admissions criteria is placed on the essays (both the personal insights and especially this supplemental). I cannot stress enough how important this essay is to your admission. Keep in mind, it MUST be submitted online by January 31, 2018 or you will not be considered for admission.
Here is the 2017 prompt (which was a doozy).
The key to successfully answering the supplemental essay is to incorporate at least one or two of the Haas Four Defining Principles (see below) and to try and focus on one story or event. Show leadership, if possible, as well as determination and grit — in other words, a can-do mindset. Haas especially likes the entrepreneurial spirit. Now, you don’t have to show all these things but keep them in mind and try and gear the essay in that direction. Regarding the four defining principles, they are the heart of Haas culture and they are:
- Question the Status Quo
- Confidence without Attitude
- Student Always
- Beyond Yourself
You can listen to the former Dean of Haas, Rich Lyons, describe the four defining principles here.
Haas Supplemental Prompt, 2018:
What does it mean to be humble? What area of your life do you struggle most with humility and why? Describe strategies you are using to cultivate humility in this area of your life.
As always I offer guidance with brainstorming, structure and editing through final draft, as well as helping perfect the resume Haas expects you to submit with the essay.

Hi Lindy,
I’d love to get feedback from you on my supplemental application response for this years question. Please let me know if this would be possible.

It’s a very difficult one. Great for Admissions but hard for students. Every student I’ve worked with has struggled this far.
The 2019 prompt came out recently: “Provide us with a specific example of how you helped to foster an environment where differences are valued, encouraged and supported. Describe the situation and the role you played. If appropriate, describe any outcomes.”
I’m currently applying and I think this is kind of a difficult question.
Thanks for reaching out. I saw it and have been coordinating with clients. This blog, I used to be more right out the gate with things. It’s on my to-do list, but you’ve spurred me onward. I will get it up tonight come hell or high water. Good luck with your application!
