IGETC for CCC to UC

New 7 Part IGETC General Ed Path: CCC to UC

A new temporary IGETC general ed path for California Community College (CCC) students has been unveiled by the UCs. This is essentially a stop-gap measure as a brand new gen ed plan for CCCs will be forthcoming in 2025 called Cal-GETC. Information on that has not yet been revealed.

IGETC (pronounced I-get-see) is a gen ed path only available to CCC students.
It stands for Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum. Students from non-CCCs will need to follow a general ed breadth path, which I will  outline in another post.

The changes to IGETC involve only one area.  Listed below is the current plan with the noted change.

Requirements:

  • All courses must be at least 3 semester units (4-5 quarter units) with a C grade or above.
  • P/NP is acceptable, although I strongly advise against that for the English courses, and possibly math, unless there is another math letter grade on your transcript.

IGETC area 1A:  English Communication
2 courses:  English composition and a critical thinking/composition course

If you have transferred to a CCC from another college you might think you have the second English completed but you might not. The critical thinking/comp course is a blended course, for the most part only available at a CCC, so double-check with your advisor to assure it is fulfilled and you can later get IGETC-certified.

IGETC area 2: Math and Quantitative Reasoning
1 course

IGETC area 3: Arts and Humanities
3A-Arts: 1 course
3B-Humanities: 1 course
A third course in either 3A or 3B

IGETC area 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences
2 courses (this used to be three courses)

IGETC area 5: Physical and Biological  Sciences
5A-Physical: 1 course
5B-Biological: 1 course
plus 1 lab to match either 5A or 5B (1 unit)

IGETC area 6: Language
Equivalent of one year of college level language or two years of high school language in the same language, with the final term being at least a C grade.

IGETC area 7: Ethnic Studies
1 course (this is a new added area)

Total:  11 courses

AP Exam scores applied to IGETC

  • Any score of 3, 4 or 5 may be applied to matching IGETC areas, as applicable.
  • A score of 3, 4 or 5 may be applied to English Area 1A, but not to English Area 1B.

Are you allowed to take courses for IGETC at more than one community college?

Yes, but the course must be on the approved IGETC list at that CCC. When you apply for certification during last term or after you have finished your IGETC plan you choose one CCC to certify it. If you are using high school language for area 6, the CCC will need a copy of your high school transcript.

Is completion of IGETC if attending a CCC a UC requirement?

It is not required to complete IGETC to get accepted to a UC, although some majors put emphasis on it.  If you are a STEM major with many required courses needed for the major, it may not be the best approach. Instead, the second option (general ed Breadth) may be better, as there are less courses needed.

I will post breadth requirements in another post.
