Focus On: UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara

Most of the students I work with have two UCs in their sites:  Berkeley and UCLA.

But behind those ultra-exclusive campuses is the mid-tier, a trio of UCs that consistently rank high in surveys and can lead to spectacular outcomes.

I’m talking about UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa BarbaraGraduating from these UCs can lead to C-suite positions, as well as provide a competitive edge to graduate study at an Ivy.

Let’s take a closer look.

UC Irvine

With multi-departments high in the national rankings, UCI has become one of the fastest-rising research universities in the country.

Snapshot:

  • Freshman acceptance rate increased to approximately 29%.
  • Over 60% of UCI students are first-generation or from low-income families, making it a national leader in social mobility.
  • While the overall admit rate hovers around 29%, certain majors (like computer science and nursing) are extremely competitive—sometimes under 10%.
  • UCI is increasing opportunities in high-demand fields by expanding its School of Engineering and launching new interdisciplinary majors, including data science.

UC Santa Barbara

Noted for its beachside campus, UCSB has grown into one of the most selective UC schools.

Snapshot:

  • Acceptance rate rose from 28% to 33%.
  • Top-ranked programs include environmental science, physics, and global studies.
  • The campus has expanded its partnerships with CCCs, creating smoother transfer paths—especially for underserved students.
  • As a leader in climate and environmental studies, UCSB blends research with activism, often drawing students interested in global impact.

UCSB is shifting away from its image as a “party school” merging into a destination for serious research and innovation.

UC Davis

Largely known for its focus on agriculture and veterinary medicine, in recent years, UCD has become a hub for health equity and climate policy.

Snapshot:

  • Acceptance has held steady at around 42%.
  • The campus continues to admit high numbers of first-gen, hispanic, and rural students, aligning with the university’s roots to its surroundings.
  • UCD’s School of Medicine and new health justice programs are pioneering outreach in underserved communities, especially through UC Davis Health.
  • A social and political focus is also big with the state capital nearby.

Davis shows how a university can be elite in research and deeply rooted in regional service. Its model is especially critical in a state as economically and geographically diverse as California.

SAT/ACT elimination and outcomes

  • With the elimination of test scores, all three campuses have shown stable or increased diversity, particularly among first-gen and low-income applicants.
  • These schools are redefining merit while still maintaining high academic standards and student outcomes.
