How Stringent are UC Berkeley Math Transfer Requirements

The following is an answer I posted on Quora:

How stringent are UC Berkeley Math major transfer requirements for a community college student? I want to transfer to UC Berkeley as a math major. Is it possible for me to be accepted before I have completed all my lower division requirements?

Well, if you go on to Assist.org, which is where you find the courses required for major completion, you will notice there are only four required courses for math (and an optional fifth course). Berkeley’s math department is one of the best in the world. Not getting the base requirements completed will put you at a severe disadvantage in the admission process.

Also, if you are hesitant about completing all requirements, or if you are hoping you can skip a course, that may send a signal about possible compatibility.

Keep in mind there are a lot of math prodigies at Berkeley, so even if you were a top-performer at another college or high school, you may be in for a rude awakening when you find yourself firmly ensconced mid-tier at Berkeley.

You can find the required courses by going to Assist (see link below), plugging in any CA community college, then Berkeley, and then Math.

For reference, the required math courses are:

MATH 1A Calculus (4)
MATH 1B Calculus (4)
MATH 53 Multivariable Calculus (4)
MATH 54 Linear Algebra and (4)
————
MATH 55 Discrete Mathematics (4)
NOTE: MATH 55 is not required for admission.
