Cal-GETC

Cal-IGETC Replaces IGETC at all California Community Colleges

California community colleges (of which there are 113) had a previois general education path for students wishing to transfer to a UC or CSU.  It was called IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum)

Starting in Fall 2025 the UC altered it ever so slightly and changed the name to Cal-GETC ( California General Education Transfer Curriculum). Anyone applying to UC as a transfer who chooses this general ed path must compete the entire sequence of courses by the last spring term before transfer..

The changes include:

  • Three courses needed for English. In addition to Area 1A and 1B there is now a 1C, ,which is oral communication or public speaking.
  • There are now just two courses needed for Arts and Humanities, one in Area 3A (arts) and one in 3B (humanities). There used to be three courses needed.
  • Language is no longer required (see below for more info)

Cal-GETC

Course grade

As before, the grade requirement is at least a C (not a C-). You may also use Pass/No Pass, if offered at that particular CCC, although there are limits as to how many P/NP courses you can have. I also always suggest taking English and math for a letter grade.

AP scores

AP exam scores of at least 3 will fulfill Cal-GETC with the exception of English. Exam scores, no matter how high, will not replace Area 1B, critical thinking and composition, or Area 1C, oral communication.

Must Cal-GETC be completed?

Cal-GETC is not an admission requirement, although many colleges prefer it, especially if majoring in the social sciences, arts or humanities. Completing Cal-GETC signs you off on all gen ed requirements at every UC, even if that college has a different GE plan.. If you do not complete Cal-GETC you will need to fulfill the GE requirements at your chosen UC.

LOTE (Language other than English)

Each college at every UC has a language requirement. Some will accept the language that was on the previous IGETC. This is an optional box that your advisor at a CCC may still fill out. The previous IGETC rule was two years of the same language in high school, with the last term being at least a C grade.  However, not every college will accept it as fulfilling the language requirement. For instance, Berkeley’s College of Letters and Science will not. Many others will. So if you have two years of high school language under your belt, you may wish to ask your advisor to sign off on it.
